A Bright Future

With the return of a live program to Northside Downs in the summer of 2007, a new era of harness racing in the Maritimes was begun. Northside Downs operates year-round with live races at the oval all summer, and live simulcasting all year through our partners, Rollie's Wharf in North Sydney, The Martin Arms in Sydney and JT's Bar in New Waterford. The track presented 29 programs in 2007, including part of the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry Association's Nova Scotia Series, with more of the same slated for 2008. The track is operated by the Cape Breton Federation of Agriculture, and is pleased to have a signed agreement with the Cape Breton Horsemen's Association.


A Storied Past

Northside Downs, located on the Cape Breton Exhibition Grounds in North Sydney, first presented live harness racing on Dominion Day, July 1, 1898. Between live racing and use as a training track, Northside Downs has hosted some of the best horses in Maritime harness racing, including Hall of Famers The Ghost, John R Braden, Toll Gate, Dudey Patch, Watchim; world champion Rudy P, Calument, Budlong, and of course Marjorie M, the Cape Breton wonder mare.

Come on out to Northside Downs where you'll be thrilled from the first post time to the last winner's circle. You can bet on it!
